Autumn Geometry

The following images are made from shots of single leaves of autumn foliage. The idea was to multiply the respective shot for a final image and to arrange them in such a way that the image area will be covered as completely as possible. In mathematics, one deals with so-called tesselations. A tesselation is the gapless and overlap-free covering of the plane by one or more geometric shapes, called tiles. Everyday examples are the floor parquet and bathroom tiles. In the case of plant leaves, their shapes cannot be expected to produce overlap-free arrangements. However one finds that these overlaps can be used to create additional nets, garlands and grids which add in an unexpected way to the composition.
